Howdy, Been listening to a LOT of drone based pieces and recordings recently and wondered if there was anything out there that i'd overlooked that you guys may class as OPTIMUM DRONE-AGE or something....pieces that you totally lose yourself in, whether it be 10mins long or 1hr+..Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros, Charlemagne Palestine, LaMonte Young, Greg Davis, Kevin Drumm, Eleh, Sun Circle, Fullerton Whitman etc etc... So yeah, thought it might be interesting if some folks listed up some of their fav 'drone' pieces....i'll start with one of my all time favs to lose myself in:
Charlemagne Palestine - Schlingen-Blängen Subtle, immense, euphoric! His St Giles gig was astounding, 6hrs felt like an eterntiy in 6mins (in a good way)...i was there but wasn't...superb! I cannot wait for the for the Limited Edition 8 hour 4 CD set Deluxe Packageon Blast First Petite! Yourself? |

Schlingen-Blängen is one of favorite pieces of all time. Immense and inspiring, I agree!

Halo Manash - Taiwaskivi (Aural Hypnox) Oren Ambarchi - Intermission 2000 - 2008 (Touch) Eliane Radigue - Triptych (Important Records) Eliane Radigue - Vice Versa, etc (Important Records) Richard Chartier - Retrieval (ERS) Richard Chartier - Two Locations (L-NE) Richard Chartier / Taylor Deupree - Specification Fifteen (12k) And finally, I've been listening to loads of music recently made with Tibetan Singing Bowls and found this ultra cheap (£0.69) download-only track on Amazon (UK) called 'Pure Tones of metal and crystal singing bowls' by an artist called Technomind...It's 1hr 14mins long, but is the best £0.69 I've ever spent! Do a search for other Technomind releases on iTunes and you'll find plenty of other great sounds there too - so sample them on iTunes then buy them cheaply at Amazon! Others I've got that I'd recommend are Alpha Binaural Beats, Gamma Binaural Beats, Delta Binaural Beats and Theta Binaural beats etc. If you like Eleh / Radigue, you'll love these.

@Hell-Lies-In-Others not heard of Halo Manash, will check it out. Got most of the Ambarchi but not up there with the Palestine for me....but Radigue is up there for sure. The lady is superb (and a looker when she was younger ;)) Chartier as well always a pleasure to listen to, nice list and good shout on the singing bowls, will have a peep. ta. Troum/Maeror Tri have never realy grabbed me, will try again...also Nurse With Wound i have a love/hate relationship with..sometimes i think superb, other times i think meh. @ovrlrd oh yes, that's great too...most of what Palestine is involved in or has recordedis up there as classic for me...Jamaica Heinekens in Brooklyn is another i love listening too. @cislunar nice list...all up there for me!
I'd like to also add Jim O'Rourke, listened to some of Long Night on the way home, crackin'! Big fan of Mizu No Nai Umi too.
Any more for any more...cheers. |

Some great suggestions here! Will check some out for sure. How about some Rosy Parlane? His album 'Jessamine' on Touch is some pretty immersive digital drones. Also, Carl Michael Von Hausswolff has an interesting way with sine waves. One of my all-time favs though is Stars of the Lid's 'Per Aspera Ad Astra' - an immense minimalism/low-frequency workout! Also, Thomas Koner...

Christopher McFall Erstlaub N. Nurse With Wound (my fav. is Salt Marie Celeste) Thomas Köner Moljebka Pvlse

@grohs - Halo Manash are an amazing group - along with Zoat Aon and Arktau Eos (all on the awesome Aural Hypnox label) - anything by them is worth a listen. 'Taiwaskivi' is amongst their most drone-based work whereas the other is ritual ambient stuff.www.auralhypnox.com - or some free download stuff from Zoat Aon at www.zoat-aon.com www.dronerecords.de have their own label (and an awesome mail-order) so check out stuff by Moljebka Pvsle, Closing The Eternity....but all their releases are worth checking out. The Lotus Eaters 'Mind Control For Infants' LP on Taiga is not only an awesome drone recording but has possibly the best packaging I've ever seen on a record. Long sold out at Taiga but I believe Forced Exposure has some copies.

...hoping to get some deep drones up on my label aswell at some point soon! |
|
|
@Hemingways_Cat yes, i always forget about Parlane, wich results in not giving him th time he deserves, back on the list he goes! Von Hausswolff - fantastic sine wave messing, great live too, gets such a powerful sound. Planning on messing with some sine wave manipulation and drones soon myself. SOTL great too, love Brian McBride's solo album, beautiful! koner great too, although i think of him as sleepy drone rather tha lose yourself drone...if that makes sense. @Orphax couple of suggestions i'll need to look into more, know the names but not the sounds. I dig some Moljebka Pvlse too, but not up there as classic drone pieces for me. @Hell_Lies_In_Others will def check out the Manash stuf and that, ta. Drone records i've dipped in and out of a bit, but nothing stuck with me. Got that Lotus Eaters too and WurmWulv but not something i go back too often. Trouble with a few of the suggestions here i know is...they're good, but tend not to be something i'll go back to and listen again and again....maybe i just need to give them another try or tries.... :) |

Guys, you might be interested in a thread that was recently started over on the Chondritic Sound/Troniks forum, looking at newish drone releases... link: http://www.chondriticsound.com/forum/viewtopic.... Pedestrian Deposit - Austere (monorail trespassing) - this CD came out last year and is killer. It has some noise elements but is largely drone-based. Other stuff on monorail is also worth checking out - much of which is on tape. I've recently been listening to Bee Mask...Has a couple of very nice tapes out on Deception Island, and an LP on Weird Forest which i have yet to hear. Also, listened to Idea Fire Company's "Beauty School" (ultra eczema) today, which is very good indeed. Lovely synth ambient/drone bizness. |

@grohs The leaves of their songs by Moljebka Pvlse is a classic. One of my most fav. drone albums ever.
Further there are some great labels out there doing amazing stuff you won't find as easy as most stuff people are not buying like crazy...(think about all the 12K and Type Records clones, without me want to sound to snobbish because they do cool things) As already mentioned Drone Records is great, but also one to check out is Taâlem (only 3" releases) and much more obscure Verato Project (but that also has quite some crap on it) or iDEAL (which I guess is well known around here), Sourdine, Conv and Monochrone Vision (also loads of abstract noise, old school industrial and more weirdness). |
|
|
ohh and now I think of it... Check out Cheapmachines - Fugue Cycle. Really impressive release. Sold out long ago at the label (Conv) but if you can pick this up somewhere...damn, really worth it.
And (things keep on coming) try the music by Ubeboet. Really diverse musician with some great releases out already (and an amazing vinyl LP coming out soonish on my own label). |
|
|
Regarding 'going back' to the stuff you didn't get into straight away, i think it depends on how you listen to it, where you listen to it...It's a much more involved style of music and requires a totally different ambience to really 'get' it - you know, Eleh is never going work for a jog around the park - i have Lady Gaga for that! ;) |
|
|
hehe, very true...all about immersing yourself in it really...i guess i connect more with 'epic' drones rather than the more ambient / difting pieces which demand a little more 'deep listening' at times. |
|

I added some drone tracks on my Typecast.... http://typerecords.com/typecasts/24 check out the Meredith Monk, Zaimph, Pauline Oliveros tracks. don't forget about Mirror and for the heavy-side of drone.... The Taj Mahal Travellers and Hototogisu |
|
|
big thumbs up for The Taj Mahal Travellers and Mirror too, although again another i don't seem to give enough time too. Got the typecast queued for listening, cheers! |

i'm a big fan of this from Marcus Schmickler too with Hayden Chisholm

Never really sure where to draw the line between Drone and Minimalism? Doesn't really matter much though I suppose, straight lines are boring anyway. To add a few more names to the lists already mentioned: Mecha/Orga (Yiorgis Sakellariou) - some great 'purist' drone often released on his own Echo Music cdr label. Has several download tracks available on his website that are well worth checking out. Mark Wastell - has covered various genres over the years, but his Tam Tam generated drone pieces are amazing ('Come Crimson Rays in particular) - no processing what so ever, apparently. As is his work with Joachim Nordwall as 'Oceans of Silver & Blood', adding the Swede's Roland S1000 into the mix. Greg Kowalsky - only know of last years 'Tape Chants', but it's fucking briliiant and one of the best albums of last year. Really need to track down some more of his work....

Nice clip Grohs - the Chippendales do Drone!!! |

i'd say: |

Yeah on a Hototogisu tip their 'The Floating Japanese Oof! Gardens of the 21st Century' is incredible dream-state drone. Very underrated, probably because it's so hard to get. Also has nobody mentioned Andrew Chalk yet? Nice to hear Bee Mask get a mention, also worth mentioning is Maurizio Bianchi's newest on Weird Forest, using elements of Josef Van Wissem's lute as the starting point (although you could hardly hear it). Keith Fullerton Whitman's works are masterclasses in the genre too - Playthroughs pre-dates a lot of the recent drone explosion and is still better than most of it. |
