It had to happen so I figured I may as well be the one to start it. Let's hope we can populate this one as well as the last few :) Today I've been mostly listening to : Robert Hampson - Vectors |

Oh man some of that Ghost Box stuff is just amazing. Wish they'd release vinyl... |

Woke up this morning to the new Mountains album, 'Choral', more specifically 'Melodica' which is a absolute stunner, amongst many others on that album.. Processed bells at start, melodica & organ coming in subtly, building and building. In a manner nothing new what they're bringing compared to what's been released out there the last couple of years (reminds me now and then of Greg Davis' 'Arbor' - Carpark Records) but yet they've somehow developed their 'style', bringing 'live' instrumentation to the forefront. Also looking forward to the Richard Skelton release on Type after checking his album via the Soundcloud player. Recommended! As re-discovering Peter Broderick's work, especially 'Home', an album - i'm ashamed to say it it now.. - that i never really gave a proper chance.. As i told John the other day, sometimes i'm just stupified by my actions.. :) Add Miles Davis & Gil Evans' 'Sketches of Spain' to that. Re-released as a 'legacy edition' the previous week, and still one of my favourite albums ever.
@John : so curious about that Black to Comm album, after what you've told me about it in Brussels.. :)

I just woke up and am listening to Shuttle358 - Frame |
Someone eating an apple in the track: Hanna Hartman - "Att fälla träd är förknippat med grova risker" from the album "Ailanthus" |
I'm back on Black To Comm's 'Alphabet 1968' - can't get enough of this. Going to rifle through my vinyl later though, maybe rock some Jay-Z :) |
Is the Black To Comm coming on vinyl do you know? Most of his other stuff has been. Rio En Medio - Frontier |
Yep it certainly will be on vinyl! I managed to grab the Mulholland 2LP in NY, sadly there's a big gash down one of the sides so I'm going to have to buy it again! |
I'll keep an eye out for the Black to Comm. on Dekorder? Looks like the Mulholland Drive LP might be quite rare. Grrrr. I hate having to buy stuff of e-Bay. You get people grading stuff as Excellent that's obviously been stored at the bottom of a swamp. Whilst I'm in Balalamenti mood, Julie Cruise - Floating Into The Night LP |
Yeah my copy was sealed, brand new from a quite commercial store in Manhattan. If they've still got some when I go back in Setpember I will try and bag you one. Still, I'm not sure whether ALL the copies are fucked... which would be a shame. The Black To Comm I'm talking about is on Type! However Marc does have a new disc coming on Digitalis soon too, both albums are very, very different mind you. The Digitalis one is more refined long-form ambient, the Type one is short, sample-heavy tracks approaching world music, classical, techno - it's great! |
Black To Comm on Type, eh? Sounds good. Though usually the phrase "world music" has me running for the hills. There's a couple of shops claiming to have the Mulholland Drive vinyl like Total Recall in Germany, but it's all backorder, please wait 60 days before we tell you we haven't got it type of stuff, so yeah if I haven't picked up a copy before you head to NY I'll let you know. |
Managed to get my copy of Mullholland Drive directly from a physical shop nearby. Sadly on the verge of bankruptcy, but still they manage to get their hands onto some real gems. And paid a measly 35 euros for it. Which is quite allright regarding it's rareness. Shuffling between the new Gregg Kowalski album (Tape Chants - Kranky Records), Alva Noto/Sakamoto/Ensemble Modern (UTP - Raster Noton), some 'loose' tracks by Marvin Gaye, over Dirty Projectors, to Red House Painters ("Down Colourful Hill", beauty). Oh, and Sonic Youth's 'The Eternal'. Uninspired imo. |
I feel awful that I got mine for $12 now. I should have bought more!! Don't worry about the 'world music' link - it's the gamelan sounds I was referring to, nothing frightning :) |
I've heard a lot about this "Tape Chants." To those of you who have heard it, what do you think about it? Anyway, I've been listening to the following: Blessure Grave - "Unknown Blessures" (Night People) Royal Trux - "Twin Infinitives" (Drag City) Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds - "Dracula Boots" (In the Red) Soothsayer - "Neptune's Daughter" (Moon Glyph) |
The new Moby album. I'm well 1999 me. |
I think 'Tape Chants' is one of the best albums this year, and I've had a good few months to get to know it. Fantastic record, very very deep and incredibly subtle. The only thing that annoys me about it is that I didn't make it :) Nice to see some Royal Trux love - did you get the LP re-issues? |
Wow, I'll have to look into Gregg Kowalski. And yes, I pre-ordered the reissues as soon as I heard about them. I was worried they might never be repressed. |
agree with john - 'tape chants' is up there with the year's best for sure. love that blessure grave tape. wish my damn lp would show up! today: savage young taterbug 'boys of a feather' abelar scout 'nep quiz contra' lawrence english 'it's up to us to live' the pink noise 'dream code'
btw- black to comm on digitalis is out TODAY. |
The Lawrence English CD is pretty good. By LP, do you mean "Learn to Love the Rope?" |

Recently: Type Podcast (wahey! Really glad this has finally gone up - I've already ordered that Bone Awl tape and will be checking out more stuff for sure. (Miasmah) Gnaw: This Face (Conspiracy) Cave: Psychic Psummer (Important) Alasehir: Torment of the Metals (Important) - really like these two Important releases, especially the Alasehir Blue Sabbath Black Cheer: The Endless Blockade (Gnarled Forest) |

Hi Jan-Arne! Great to see you on the board :) The show was a long time coming that's for sure, but I'm gonna be getting it done monthly from now on. Soundcloud is a great system and devoid of the problems we were having with the old server. Onwards and upwards! I've got a LOT to play you all. |
Thanks for the warm welcome, John! You're right about the Grand Nutz track by the way - I can't seem to get it out of my head. Not too happy about that though, feels like it's haunting me. |

It's the magic of Mary J crossed with the magic of something altogether more worrying. Seriously, be glad I didn't play his rendition of the Flintstones... heh. |
