Hmm, if you don't mind, I have a few questions: a) Do you pay for accomodation, flights and/or car-fuel for yourself? b) Will you actually make a little money with this tour, or is it more like vacation with concerts as a way of making it less costy? c) Does it get boring to play the same stuff every day? d) Is "Concern" your Day-Job, or just some additional and fun side-thing?
Please don't get me wrong, it's just a matter of general interest. I enjoy your music and own every album on vinyl, but wouldn't exactly consider "Concern" as a name that merits a european tour and that generates a huge amount of interest. For me, it's really home listening stuff. So I find this endeavour quite fascinating, as it seems a little out of proportion. Of course I wish you all the luck in the world, and I may even join the Hamburg gig, if I can (hope to snag a copy of the new LP!). But I'm really quite interested in the logistics of this tour, so may be you can help me out? |

hi, to answer your questions: a: Yes, I generally pay for everything myself and have never received any substantial grant / arts / cultural funding for my tours (certainly never from the US or academia). b: It is very unlikely that I will break even, let alone profit after all my transportation expenses. c: Anything can be boring on a daily basis, it's all relative. I'd much rather travel, make music and meet new people daily, rather than simply working/being at home. I earnestly enjoy performing live and there is always an element of improvisation, progress and self-critique. d: No, I make a living by driving a taxi (graveyard shift), but music is much more important to me, though it has never & likely never will be a sustainable source of income.
I generally do not tour because someone invites me, offers to cover expenses, or anything like that. I tour because I have a passion for traveling and the overall lifestyle of touring and I want to see as much of the world and connect with others while I still can. I honestly am not very concerned whether or not my music or "status" warrants long tours, it is not my motivation. Interest be damned, this is what I want to do with my life and I work very hard for it. Performing small shows for a small amount of nice people is fine with me.
If you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer them, better yet, please come to the Hamburg show and we can meet in person! |
