Tovah Olson / Smack Music 7 / Lexie Mountain / Inca Ore More than 2 years in preparation, the 2nd of Curor’s double 8” lathecut sets of female vocal explorations is finally available. The line-up this time is equally as mindbending as the last. Inca Ore’s “Honeysuckle” was actually intended to be on the earlier release, but a series of misfortunes meant that it had to be held over for the follow-up. My goodness, though, it’s been worth the wait as it offers that same nada-fidelity homespun otherliness so bewitching on Eva’s astonishing debut a few years back. Tovah Olson (Dead Machines) scares several shades of faecal matter from the listener with what sounds like a through-the-wall recording of a domestic dispute. It’s possibly the most disturbing thing committed to wax (or plastic) since Zos Kia’s “Rape.” Following up her recent release (split with Kuupuu) on the Curor-related Threshold Tapes, Karen Constance (Blood Stereo, Polly Shang Kuan Band), aka Smack Music 7, turns in another mini-masterpiece of tape assemblage so murky that any vocal element (remember the brief?) is barely discernable. Lexie Mountain’s solo recordings are typically darker than her gleeful whoop-alongs with the Mountain Boys, and on “Battleship Massachusetts” she wails and moans like some tormented inmate to a super-distorted recorder accompaniment. The set comes in beautiful b&w artwork courtesy of Jonna Karanka (Kuupuu). Whether Curor’s lathecut releases are a corrective to a male-dominated noise underground, or whether, in fact, they attest to the number of women active in the scene and the quality of their work, it’s a shame that this is to be the label’s valedictory release. Is there another label ready to take up the baton? We're not planning on distro'ing these, we'd like to make back as much cash from the label as possible, unless no-one buys em from us of course. |
