"Forming a near-perfect composite of high concept sound art and cathartic rock abandon, the resulting album is one that eschews traditional song forms without aimless meandering. Building upon walls of sound, a keen sense of melody is prevalent amongst blasts of noise and scattershot percussion, creating a statement of intent that is difficult to ignore."

dunno about the music but that paragraph is hard to beat :)

Type Tour / Signals (Rothko), Iris Garrelfs + guest, 7th May @ Muse Gallery

A night of soundscapes, improvisation and sonic art in an atmospheric and receptive environment curated by Kailas Elmer and Martin A. Smith. Featuring: Ambient, drone, electronica, IDM, future sounds, electro acoustic, and sound art performers.

Signals:

Signals was formed by Chris Gowers (Karina ESP, Evelyn Records) and Phil Julian (Cheapmachines, Authorised Version) during summer 2004, initially to work on collaborative performance for the 2004 London Headphone Festival.

During November 2005, Mark Beazley of Rothko joined Signals to play live as part of the on-going Evelyn Records evenings in London, cementing the core line-up.

The trio’s live performance’s consist of 15 to 20 minute drone and melody explorations, utilizing bowed and effected guitar, live laptop manipulations and sampling, bowed ceremonial bowls and effected bass guitar.

Iris Garrelfs:

Iris Garrelfs is a composer/performer intrigued by change, fascinated with voices and definitely enamoured by technology. She often uses her voice as raw material, which she transmuted into machine noises, choral works or pulverised “into granules of electroacoustic babble and glitch, generating animated dialogues between innate human expressiveness and the overt artifice of digital processing” as the Wire Magzine put it.

Described as the Diamanda Galas of Glitch, Iris’ training into creating through voice began very early on. Her parents sang in the village choir, and would often practice at home with Iris making up new melodies, 2nd and 3rd voices to whatever was being sung. She got into the attractions of technology as a teenager, stumbling across her dad’s pulp si-fi magazines. Iris is still waiting for an implant that will siphon off her sonic nerve impulses, fragments of melody, rhythm and correlation floating around in her body and brain. A vital part of her work, be it using voice or other sound material, is improvisation and the use of random elements, the ephemeral fragility and risk implied in giving up control to me moment, a sonic singularity.

Iris performs solo as well as in collaboration with other artists, for example Robert Lippok (To Rococo Rot), Kaffe Matthews, Scanner, Si-cut.db and others. She also performs with the improvising group Symbiosis Orchestra. Recording collaborations include si-cut.db and Freeform - the latter has beeng re-released as part of the Bernt Friedman compiled and remixed compilation "Condensed" on Nonplace

The recent album Specified Encounters, released on the French label Bip-Hop, has been moulded from dissected voice sounds. Her new release on the other hand, fresh of the press, is her first ever 10" vinyl piece, the radio project "(Talking) Space To Space" on the German art-label lich-tung, uses no voices at all. She is currently working on a globe-spanning "(Talking) Space To Space" installation and is very much looking forward to a residency at the Mexican Centre for Music and Soundart in 2007.

New neighbours.  Live directly over the road, so have said hello and asked if they fancy coming over for a beer at some point.

Type Tour / 20-03 Vatican-Analog with Chefkirk, Orphax and Paddo One Obie One

Date: Saturday, 20 March 2010

Time: 20:30 - 23:30

Location: Perron 58 (zwijsenpand)

Street:  Gasthuisring 58

Town/City: Tilburg, Netherlands

On March 20th there will be a live performance in Tilburg at Zwijsenpand with Chefkirk, Orphax and Paddo One Obie One organized by Vatican-Analog. An evening full of experimental sounds from soft psychedelic drones to harsh walls of noise.

chefkirk is Roger H. Smith (b. 1976 U.S.A.). Smith utilizes the no-input mixing board as his main instrument, along with a sampler, and two effects pedals. It is this minimal setup that forces Smith to fully explore the realms and possibilities of the no-input mixing technique. Smith calls on the influences of his everyday environment. The sounds that exist in the cracks of everyday life: the breaking of Atlantic surf on a deserted stretch of North Carolina coastline, the cicadas’ harsh call on humid summer nights in the South, the distant horn of a shipping barge on the Mississippi mixed with the broken glass of Bourbon Street, or the wind whistling through the mighty Douglas Fir trees of the Pacific Northwest.

Orphax is the ambient drone project of Sietse van Erve (also part of Zonderland). Influenced by artists such as Troum and Thomas Köner, Orphax makes slowly evolving, emotionally loaded music which takes you into a deep dark world. In the years he has developed more and more his own style and which by now can be described as emotional, dark and heavy drones. Over the years he has released several mp3s which are all free for download from his own website, http://www.orphax.com as well as through the Internet Archive.

Paddo One Obie One started creating tunes somewhere in 1410 b.c. somewhere in the Galaxy between Venus and Battle star Galactica. Back then it was called "Krrr" and Grrr". (Nowadays it is called Noise). Enjoying the earthly movements, Paddo One caught up really quick with walking the earthly walk. Still going on, many releases and shit has been released and there is even more to come! Paddo One Talks to you through a way that is even beyond the Mars. No longer out of space, but in spaces he plays. Every tune is a different vibe. One might be of a Galactic Battle Sword, while other tunes may be the failed starts of a Cruise Motor, awaiting demolition.
