We remember it well now, our younger days, when we got the cassette deck for the car. The windows always rolled up, closing us off to the outside world. We moved steadily as things rolled by, always with the cassettes playing at the loudest possible volume. The sounds that emanated were like messages of clarity as we traversed that world around us. These were voices of truth that seemed to provide a sense of direction. At the very least they sounded that way in our minds. It was like entering a circle of like-minded fellows, kneeling and clasping hands, understanding these messages brought forth to our attention. The windows of the car were like the walls of a chamber in which we found ourselves. The sounds from the cassettes completed the thin barrier between ourselves, and the world as we saw it, creaking and swaying around us. As long as we were in these spaces together, things began to make sense. There was a direction to follow as we had found those who would accompany us on these endless journeys. The fear would dissipate, replaced by purpose and assurance. We had found those who would understand us, as we could also understand them.

When the car would stop and the engine would cease, the player would also die away. The tape of the cassette motionless. At that point we would often sit for minutes at a time. Without the sounds there with us, the silence was deafening. We would be alone in our own enclosed world with absolutely nothing. The separation between us, and the world outside the windows, could never be more evident than in those moments. Stationary and in silence, we saw black. The world as it was. Nothing.

Thanks to Yellow Swans man Pete Swanson for yet another incredible mix. Also before I forget, the new Yellow Swans album 'Going Places' drops very soon now (February) so start salivating. I might as well leave it to Mr. Swanson himself to explain the rest :

"First off, apologies to any of the artists that I chopped up.. for the sake of brevity and flow in the mix... I had to do it..

This mix started as something I was just slapping together to send to Gabe since he said he hadn't been hearing much interesting new stuff.. and I have been hung up on a lot of new music lately. I wanted to spread the inspiration. So, I got into it, and thought this would actually make an ok thing for Mr. Twells here... So here it is..

Most of this stuff is pretty around and available.. Hell, a lot of it is NEW.. so.. if you like the tracks from Nmperign, Mouthus, Sade Sade, Flaming Tunes, John Pilcher, Moniek Darge or Graham Lambkin... that shit is around. So.. Things you should know about this.. Rene Hell.. this is apparently only available on a blog.. ooof......... Peaking Lights, this is for an upcoming night people release.. Sade Sade is Gabe.... My track on here is an outtake from these studio recordings I did at the Marriage studio a few months back.. I didn't like much of what I recorded.. but.. I did edit this lil guy together for Yeti magazine and I think it's OK.

otherwise, this is what I've been playing at home lately.. Enjoy!"

Mouthus - EU Tour Singularity (edit)
Nmperign - Fault
John Wiese - Circle Snare (second)
John Pilcher - Song for O
Flaming Tunes - Beguiling the Hours
Greg Malcolm - Ghosts From the Past
Reanimator - Clicks and Drones May....
Sade Sade - Point of Praxis (edit)
Moniek Darge - Fairy Tale
English & Toshimaru Nakamura - The Color Of (edit)
Anestis Logothetis - Fantasmata 1960 (edit)
Pete Swanson - Yeti Outtake
Graham Lambkin - Softly Softly Copy Copy Track 2 (edit)

Academy of Thrift is the part time unhinged half brother of James Taylor of Swayzak. Leaving the 4/4 pulse in the car park, he takes us on a dark and dingy tour of ring road Cash Converters. A highly handmade / homemade selection that somehow plows a furrow though thick clumps of tape, lathe cuts and lobitrate files. Like marmalade on top of jam on top of butter on top of toast, the sound is thick and sticky.Half forgotten two week old hazy rave highs ring in yr ears only to dissolve into bubbles of hiss. One for all you lovers out there.....

Marc Richter is a record collector. He's the kind of guy you want to know because he unearths stuff that you never even come across in day to day life. It's one of the traits that makes the Dekorder label so interesting and certainly the backbone of his new album (for Type...) 'Alphabet 1968' so curious and astounding. It should make perfect sense then that he is contributing a Typecast revealing his far-reaching collection of tunes, and in 'F*CK KRAUTROCK' he has put together something that defies simple classification. As Dizzee Rascal might say - Bonkers.

Andreas Dorau & Holger Hiller - Guten Morgen Hose

Tony Wilson aka Spykidelic is a close friend of Type, so it was only a matter of time before we tapped into his mixing talents for the Typecast series. A weathered producer, he's been part of too many records to even mention, but these days he's probably best known for being part of Knives Ov Resistance and Zurich (with Neil Halstead). With Zurich's 'lost' EP coming out on 12" on Important later this month (seriously, you won't want to miss this) it seemed like the perfect time to get Tony to contribute. Here's some blurb from the man himself :

“This mix was basically a practice run by myself for the Dausteg event which took place on September 10th 2009 at Jakob Kulturkirken (Jakob Culture Church) in Oslo. Dausteg is an irregular club concept between me and Norwegian sound and visual artist Are Mokkelbost: I’m an ex-raver from South London with an interest in Norse metal and Are’s kind of the opposite. The night on the 10th was produced in conjunction with Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival who enabled us to book Mount Kimbie, Mick Barr (Ocrilim/Orthrelm/Krallice) and Oslo Noise/Hip Hop collective Tri-Function Million to play live alongside us DJing.”

Jed Bindeman is probably best known for his skin-bashing in trans-continental noise-rock band Heavy Winged, but those of us who know him are aware he's a little more busy than that. Taking on rhythm duties in Eternal Tapestry, frequently collaborating with Type's very own Xela (hear him on 'In Bocca Al Lupo') and running a wonderful sideline in vinyl mail order he's one of Portland's most vibrant characters. So we asked him to make a mix...

Friend of Type and forum member Ryan Carr (aka Molting Music) has compiled this special edition of his radio show just for us! With songs mixed with poetry it's really a rather singular experience! Here's what he has to say...

"Molting Music was an idea that arose from the rabid interest of literature of my friend Katherine and my own obsession with music. We both love sharing poetry and the latest records with each other, which eventually led to us wanting to share them with others. So, Molting Music has become a weekly themed podcast in which we string together music and poetry. This exclusive show for Type Records is inspired by sweltering summer days and the latest rise of psych rock/pop and is dedicated to my friend Steve Rosborough. Steve, recently acquired his first outside artist to put out a tape on his Minneapolis-based Moon Glyph Tapes. I hope you enjoy these songs accompanied by poetry by the Beatniks."

It is with great pleasure that I can announce another guest Typecast to the site, this time from ex-Slowdive drummer Simon Scott. Some of you may know that Simon is also responsible for the Kesh label and does a mean line in solo tunes (with an album due for the Miasmah label any minute). I had the pleasure of doing some live dates with him recently and asked him to rustle together a mix... the rest as they say, is history. Here's some words from Mr. Scott,

"Mix tapes rock hard so to be asked to make one when the UK weather was keeping me indoors when I should've be outside breathing in the pollen I jumped at the chance. So with no desire to woo a lady, as was the way back in the day of making TDK/Maxwell mix tapes as a kid, I pulled a random selection of records off my shelf and under the sombre tone of the summer rain and grey skies I went to work. We begin in the future as French artist M&C hasn't been released yet and go right back fifty five years to the early fifties with crazy Karlheinz when electronic music was rapidly reaching out and electronic musical instruments were getting easier to get hold of. In between there is music that has and still sits in my mind when asked what I musically get my kicks from. There is so much more but hopefully you may get to hear some unfamiliar music that could perhaps inspire you to go and make some music or dig deeper".

Monolyth & Cobalt, Harmonium Melodies, Kesh Recordings (2009)
SHU:DO, We Watch Over You, Quartermass (2002)
Matmos, Action at a distance, Delux (1999)
A.R.Kane, Baby Milk Snatcher, Rough Trade (1988)
Flying saucer attack, Respect, Drag City (1997)
Pere Ubu, Heart of darkness, Cooking Vinyl (1975)
Seasons (Pre-Din), Above The Tides Fold (4), Thy (2009)
So, Untitled 1, Thrill Jockey (2003)

Yellow Swans are without a doubt one of the most important and celebrated acts in the 'noise' genre, and it's with great pleasure that we welcome the duo to the Type label for their final studio album (yep, it's official). Obviously coming to Type has its strict rules, and I made Mr. Pete Swanson promise to do a mix for the Typecast series. Within days it was waiting for me in my inbox, and what a mix it was, full of sunbleached summer jams. But that's enough from me, it's best hearing something from Pete himself...

"This is my first "podcast" and I'm not set up for it. I made a mix tape, like I've done for years.. and just took the tape down to the computer in my basement studio and dumped the tape down to that. I ended up doing a little bit of editing so there wasn't so much clunking around between songs and so that the shahs song wasn't that much quieter than everything else. I did allow the Roy Montgomery song to cut off at the end of side B since that's how it happened. Apologies about the low bit rate the reasons for it are not very interesting so I'll leave it at that.

I made this mix shortly after going camping for Scott Goodwin's birthday. It was a real good time mainly due to Scott's cooking, and the company wasn't too shabby either. This dude Cary, who's been an acquaintance for awhile was on the trip. He's a super nice guy and very involved in local music stuff here in Portland.. He and I spent a lot of time talking about local music and what we were into. At one point late in the evening, he said, "you know Pete, it sounds like you only like pretty dark music." Listening to this mix, I guess he's sort of right. No summer jams. I would like to think I like music that's a little more complex than just being downer tunes, but i guess not. This is just the stuff I jam when I'm at home.. next one will be higher bit rate and all white reggae..."

Brad Rose is the man behind so many projects I don't think I can even remember them all - The North Sea, Ajilvsga, Altar Eagle, Sea Zombies. That's just a few of them and I'm already worn out. Despite being prolific though, he also manages to run one of the finest labels on the planet, the lovely Digitalis Industries. With a steady stream of tapes, vinyl and, yeesh, cds they never disappoint. Here's a collection of tracks from the man himself, setting the scene for an afternoon of sun drenched picnicking. I'll bring the Scotch eggs...
